Worldview- Silk Thread Art from Ghana

What Do You Think?:
Over the weekend I went to an art expo in my hometown, Philadelphia. I made sure to go to every table, hear every story, and support the artists I most believed in. The table that stood far above the rest was hosted by African World Imports and Tours. They feature Silk Thread Art, which is an embroidery-like artwork from the Ashanti people of Ghana. The actual process of creating this work is with a leather canvas and silk thread. They thread pieces of silk to create images, and they don't leave any space on the canvas blank. It was an interest process and one that I really fell in love with. Check out more of their work at africanworldimports.com and let me know what you think.

Flashback Iconic- Chanel No. 5

What Do You Think?:
This iconic fragrance is reportedly sold once every 30 seconds. Chanel No. 5 was legendary couturier Coco Chanel's first fragrance, which was created by French perfumer Ernest Beaux in 1921. It has sold continuously since the first day of its release and is characterized by its waxy rose top note. If you haven't finished your holiday shopping, this is a easy gift option.

Unconventional- Urban Couture

What Do You Think?:
Elle Italia has a wonderful shoot with Liya Kebede. The shoot was very 'couture street'; it uses an urban landscape but is very beautifully styled and put together. Everyone knows Liya is by overall fav model (ok.. a close second to naomi's unreachable fierecness) and this is one of the best shoots that I've seen of her in a while. She wears a few scarves in this editorial which is most likely from her charitable organization (theliyakebedefoundation.org). Overall, two thumbs up. Pick up a copy at your local Borders...

Tinted Glow- Ajuma Nasanyana

What Do You Think?:
Ajuma is a MosaMuse favorite and muse for designer Vivienne Westwood. The Kenyan model got her start at a Kenyan modeling competition and was fourth runner up in Ford's Supermodel of the World search. She then went on to sign with Ford, walking the runway for Vivienne Westwood and the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. She then went on to pose in front of the cameras of Giles Bensimon and Juergen Teller. I'm really into her look. Her editorial is beyond fierce. And at the end of the day shes the muse for one of the best designers out there.... could it be any better? Keep up the hot work.

What Do You Think?:
I'm headed out to see Avatar. I'm super excited to see the special effects and make up artistry. Zoe Saldana is the leading lady... love her! Did you see the movie? What were your thoughts? I'll be back with an update, but I'm pretty sure it will be 2 thumbs up.

UPDATE: I saw the movie. It was great. It was the first movie that I've been to and a NY audience cheered. Beautiful graphics. Loved it.

Contrast-Vogue Beats Elle

What Do You Think?:

How did Vogue snatch Lady Gaga before Elle? Lady GaGa appears on the December issue of Vogue and will be on the January issue of Elle. How backwards is that? Just wanted to share this pic tho. I promise this will be my last Lady GaGa post...at least until 2010. :)

Fresh Face- Hye Park

What Do You Think?:

I really like this girl. She has a very cute look and I like her signature mole. Hye Park is a Korean born model who has appeared in Numero, Korean Vogue, French Vogue and Italian Vogue. She has also been the face of Tiffany & Co., MaxMara and D&G. She got her big break when she attended a University of Utah model casting. The big question is... why was she in Utah? Anyway, she made her way to the Big Apple and is now one of the most sought after faces. I think she is a great person to keep tabs on. Lets see what she does next...

Collision- Racism + Comedy

What Do You Think?:

British Iranian comedian Omid Djalili takes a stand against the recent attacks on Iranians. When I first tuned into the channel I was completely shocked. He has raw honesty and he is taking a stance against the way that his fellow Iranians are being treated. He said he used to be a manager and someone in the office said he was funny and he has never looked back. The BBC recently gave him his own show. I personally think that hes needed at this time. He completely made his point but he also entertained. Check it out....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fj74bbRxFus

Collision- MAC + GAGA

What Do You Think?:

GAGA is in the new MAC campaigns! Unfortunately, this falls as flat as a matte nude lipstick. This is Lady Gaga, the most outragious "freak bitch" out there, and this is what MAC pulled off? This is less exciting then the ads for Eve and less eye-catching that Pam Anderson's... well, ad. I'm so disappointed. This MAC ad is right up Lady GaGa's alley. It is super consistent with her brand imaging yet nothing at all is appealing, alluring, or amazing. Were the campaign managers asleep during her Bad Romance video? How do you ladies feel?

Hidden- Tanekeya Word

What Do You Think?:

This girl is dope! Today I was scrolling through Clutch Mag and they highlighted painter Tanekeya Word and I instantly fell in love. I can't say it enough... this girl is dope! She's like the modern Picasso (for lack of better art reference lol). But honestly, I am in love with her choice of bold colors and the images she chooses to illustrate. Her paintings tell a complete story from "Once upon a time" to "Happily ever after".. its a beautiful fantasy. I would want any of these pieces in my living room. You know what, I think I'm going to see if I can hire her to create the new MosaMuse set. Or maybe I'll have her as my first podcast interview? I dunno. All I know is this is a new MosaMuse favorite!! Check her out at www.tanekeyaword.com.

Contrast- Couture Infants

What Do You Think?:

Jourdan Dunn gave birth to a healthy baby boy! Here she is walking for Jean Paul Gaultier while she was seven months pregnant, and personally I think she looks even more beautiful with a full face. Pregnant or not, Jourdan can hold her own in the spotlight. She is even listed on NY Magazine's site as the most popular model. But not to take anything away from Dunn, but I'm pretty sure that spot can be bought with the right price or right agent/media hook up. I'm just saying. Anyways, I hope to see her back on the runways for NY Fashion Weeks Spring shows. Oh yea, Gisele had her baby as well... but, um.. who cares? Congrats Jourdan!
p.s. shouts out to NY Mag for reporting that first. I would have missed that one.

Flashback Iconic- Calvin Klein Advertisements

What Do You Think?:
Remember those iconic CK1 ads? I used to LIVE for them. I wanted nothing more than to recreate those images in a modern day appeal. But, it seems like they beat me about a year ago with these. They are so hot and inviting. I love them. But you know what they're missing? The COMMERCIAL! The commercial was what made the commercial great. With all those greasy hair drug addict looking models... and that one black girl! haha. Remember?? So shouts out to Calvin Klein and his ad crew. They get the nod for this weeks Flashback Iconic post!

Collision- Disney + Culture

What Do You Think?:

I remember dressing up as Princess Jasmine for Halloween. Back in the day that was as close as Disney got to having a Black Princess. But finally Disney feels its safe to venture out. Here's my opinion: At first I could care less that their was a black Disney character. I guess because it took them soooo long. I mean, Mattel finally came out with a black doll line. Hello... super late! But now that we have a black Pres, businesses seem to be more culturally conscious. But lets be real, they knew what they were doing. They knew that little black girls had to buy blonde barbie (although my mom wouldn't allow it... thumbs up mom). There is just so much wrapped up in the dolls you play with. White women talk about how Barbie gave them a complex because of her body shape. Now think about what happens when your brown hands are wrapped around a vanilla doll with features that are nothing like yours? IISSUUUEEES. haha. And whats sick about it is that they (Mattel and Disney) knew that was happening. So now that its marketable to have things from other cultures we have a black princess. And let me not steer you wrong. I'm all about the dollars and cents. I get it. But its SUPER late. BUT... at the end of the day I'm all for black dolls and movies! I would have LOVED this as a child. It was rare that we were able to see ourselves on tv as children. Other than Family Matters, I cant remember watching something I could possibly relate to. So thumbs up to Disney and Mattel for not messing with the heads of our little black princesses as they grow and develop their identity. I already know what I'm going to be next Halloween. And yes, I'm forcing my bf to be a frog.
p.s. Ladies of all races, go see the movie and take a little one w/ you! Change happens one step at a time. And its about time!

Gaye McDonald's modeling career began in 2005 after she won a Caribbean Model Search. She then signed with Next Management and within a month she was on the cover of Luire Magazine. Since, she has walked the catwalks of Diesel, DVF, Heatherette and Lanvin. She has also graced the pages of French Vogue and was the face of Benetton ad. Pink- Color Pencils

What Do You Think?:

Jewlery Designer Maria Christina Bellucci's take on a cocktail ring is so cute and versatile without looking cheap and childish. She makes rings out of colors pencils in a very refined way. I personally think that you can mix this playful ring into the mix with a very sophisticated get up. Its an attention getting, conversation starter that would be a perfect piece at a networking event. It would also be pretty cool with a pair a jeans, a t-shirt, and some fun jewelry. I'm waiting to how creative she can get with chalk.

Contrast- Fela! and Broadway

What Do You Think?:

Fela has opened on Broadway to mixed reviews. Some have said that the play lacks a story line and character development. While others marvel its transition from an off Broadway play to an opening Broadway debut with a star studded cast. Nonetheless, both sides seem to agree that Fela is extremely entertaining and a much needed splash of color on the Broadway scene. I've never been interested in writing a theater review, but I do want to at least shed light on something out there that you may overlook. I mean, its a better option than going to see Phantom of the Opera or Mary Poppins. Lets be honest.

Collision- Cruz + Broken Embraces

What Do You Think?:

Anyone who knows me knows that I have never been a fan of Penelope's look. Yet, everyone has always told me how "classic" she looked. But her mousy features were always so far from attractive that I dismissed any notion of Cruz as a beauty. But something about this David Edelstein film, Broken Embraces, just fits. Everything from the scenery to the way it was shot to Cruz herself is beyond stunning. I mean, this is like one of those fantasies you just want to live in. If you haven't seen the trailer yet just think of Gwen Stefani's "Cool" video. And if you can't get that reference... i mean.... well just google it. Anyways, I am absolutely in love with this imaging she has going on in the film. I admit, she looks amazing. Maybe I'm late? I doubt it. Seriously. But I have always been the one to give credit where credit is due. And the film, the set design, the hair/ make up, the stylist and the actress are just perfect! I can't tell you what the story is about, but on the strength of the imaging alone...this film is a must see.

Model Daul Kim Found Dead

What Do You Think?:
Twenty year old model, Daul Kim was found dead in her apartment earlier this morning. Her agency confirms her death but the cause of death has yet to be announced. There is huge speculation that the Korean born model committed suicide. Upon reading this story I was beyond shocked. Not only because shes so young, but more because this is becoming a trend. Each year you hear about 'models' who commit suicide and you have to wonder why. Personally, if you come into the industry at the age of 20 (or younger) and your always subjected to being what other people want you to be, it may cause a little confusion. Not to mention on your time away from the castings and agency meetings are spent in clubs which are known to be a place of pretend. One can become a mannequin because most people care less about what you say and how you feel and only about what you look like. Its a very dangerous thing to not take your career and your life into your own hands. You can just be a fixture in other people's (40+ yr old agents'...) dreams. I am not saying this to say that it was the case with Daul Kim. May she rest in peace. I am more so being honest about the industry with hopes on inspiring girls to take their dreams into the own hands and make it happen for themselves. The quicker it comes the quicker it goes.

As a walking canvas Grace Jones commands your attention. She is personally one of my favorites because she embodies art and expresses herself so lavishly yet tastefully. The androgynous beauty was was known as a singer, actress, model and Andy Warhol's muse. Shes a goddess to the gays and a icon for fashionistas across the board. Precious has been on everyone's list as a must see. I've seen it... liked it.. and definitely would recommend it. More compelling than the film is this teaser poster. I love how its not the standard profile views of the two leading actors with the look of drama/fear/lust in their eyes with bold movie scribble on everything. Its actually pretty cool. The actual poster poster looks like watercolors and also gets a thumbs up from me. Sometimes behind the scenes peopledon't get any kudos... but I, personally, am appreciative.

Fresh Face- Kelly Moreira

What Do You Think?:

She's just a Myspace chick whose submission to Elite Model Look France via Myspace has landed her on the YSL, Dries Van Noten, Lanvin and Kenzo runways. This French born beauty has an amazing complexion and is known in the industry for her lips and legs. She has only been signed for a few months but there is major buzz around this year. I really think she has potential to be a contrasting appearance to the very cookie cutter looks of Chanel and A. Sosa. I really want them to find depth in her appearance and give her some more edgy work instead of simply making her the same image that we've seen over, and over, and over before. Best of luck Kelly.

Collision- H&M + Jimmy Choo

What Do You Think?:

This collaboration should be great! This Saturday, head to H&M (but pls not the one I'm planning on) to pick up a pair of Jimmy Choos at H&M prices. Now look, no one in my opinion has had a better H&M collection than Stella McCartney (I know a lot of you will argue against that).. but she started the skinny jean trend with zippers on the ankles for only $49.99. But I think Jimmy Choo can give her a run for her money. H&M is only selling his collection in 200 stores around the country. I guarantee I will come back with a bag and a pair (or 2) of shoes for under $150 all together.
Jimmy Choo is doing great with their cobranding this year. They also paired with Hunter. I am in love with Hunter's Jimmy Choo faux croc rainboots. I asked my bf for a pair earlier this yr and I'm still waiting (frown). No doubt I'll head to H&M myself!

"GA GA OOH LALA"
I love this girl! Please check out her new video "Bad Romance" and look out for the scene where shes wearing the bear rug as a coat. I LIVE! She stole my heart dragging that bear head haha. FINALLY... someone worth watching.
But let me be honest, I wasn't into the costume thing for a while. The whole panties with the shades and thigh high boots. I was skeptical because (to be honest) I didnt think she was hot enough to pull it off. It was too Rihanna (meaning, it looked as if she was trying too hard). But now that I got to see this video and the whole vision come together seamlessly... I'm all for this GaGa chick. Shes hot. Shes fun. Shes needed. I want front row tickets! She's a must see show.. an I'll follow this girls' career. After she locks down the music (which she can do with her eyes closed at this pt) where should she go next?

Contrast- The White House is The New Black

What Do You Think?:

Anna Wintour's Prada shoes have stepped into the White House. Teamed with Forest Whitaker (huge move for him, yay), Yo Yo Ma, Sarah Jessica Parker, Edward Norton and 19 others, Wintour's role is to inform the President on expanding the role of arts in society. Many other countries have a national figure in this position, and its great that America is finally coming around. It seems like America is years behind everyone lately, right? Anyways, Michelle Obama is the honorary chair of the Committee on the Arts and Humanity. From what I've read about Anna (who btw is one of my idols) thinks that fashion and the global economy are closely related and she really pushes for the US government to reform some of the international trade laws. I'll keep you posted on this committee because I think its going to be a huge component in our society as we mature, and possibly what I retire as the head of it... If Anna can, I can! BTW, why isn't Oprah up on that list?

Flashback Iconic- Naomi Campbell: The Angel In Red

What Do You Think?:

No other muse is comparable. MosaMuse would like to pay homage to the legendary Naomi Campbell for creating a strong path for women of color. The British beauty started at the age of 8 when she was casted in Bob Marley's "Is this love?" video. She was the first black model to appear on the cover of British Vogue and soon after became the face of Nars and Ralph Lauren. Shes walked many catwalks, was the face of many magazines and dated many Hollywood bachelors (including Robert Di Nero and Mike Tyson) She published a book, Swan, detailing a model's life. Shes also known for creating Design House of Naomi Campbell, producing shower gels and perfumes. She appeared in numerous movies and even came out as a recording artist. I love her because she did EVERYTHING. Shes an entrepreneur, cover girl, fashion icon, actress, playboy bunny, singer and bitch. What else could a girl want? Thanks Naomi!

The 5 ft 10 inch beauty is known for her distinct brows and long legs. Pink- Another Angel Gets Her Wings

What Do You Think?:

Emanueala de Paula (pic above) and Chanel Iman have both been added to the new Victorias Secret roster!! This of course is a huge deal to any models career. These ladies can now ask for the big $ in any shoot/ campaign across the board. The show tapes in NY on the 16th. I think the only reason I'll tune in is to see if sweet Chanel can pull the over the top sex appeal needed. (i do hope she does) But other than that, I've been watching the same glittery catwalk for about 10 yrs now an nothing seems to amaze me anymore. Heres what im wondering: VS's obsession with Heidi Klum will just make you wonder why exactly shes been named the face of the brand. I like her... but I dont get it. The hottest girl in the crew, Adriana Lima wont be there so is there really a pt? We all know they will reveal "the most expensive bra in the world" which will make they $56 push up look like a breeze. At least we can cross our fingers and hope Seal wont come on the stage and sing with his wife... whose idea was that? Anyways, best of luck to Chanel and Emanueala (and Selita). Flashback Iconic- John Galliano

What Do You Think?:

Its all about who you know and John Galliano knew the right people. The famous John Galliano would not be the renowned designer he is today if it wasn't for the positioning of Vogue editor, Anna Wintour. In 1993 Anna Wintour persuaded a Porteguese Socialite to allow Galliano to use his mansion for a fashion show. He was subsequently appointed chief designer of Givenchy. Three years later, Alexander McQeen took over the line and Galliano was moved to Dior where he positioned himself to be the person he is today. Here is his most recent work for his Spring'10 RTW line. Thoughts?

Contrast- Laura Stone Black and White

What Do You Think?:

Maybe its just me... (?) I'm less furious about the fact that you painted a white girl black, more furious that a black girl wasn't hired to do the shoot. Italian Vogue's spread is of Laura Stone, supermodel known for her gaped teeth, curvy body, and W's "it girl" cover status. In the spread, Laura is painted to depict a black woman. (she was also painted in whiteface) I get that pushing the line is sooo necessary to sell any print magazine now a days, but its beyond contradictory that the magazine that gained so much press (and sales) for its "All Back Issue" couldn't hire a black model for the shoot? I am pretty sure Sessilee Lopez, Chanel Iman, R'El Dade or the COUNTLESS amounts of beautiful black models could have fit it into their schedules. Lets be real. I'm just furious that black models can't get jobs yet someone decided to paint Laura Stone black. Oh wait.... maybe this is why the evolution of MosaMuse from small blog to a black fashion empire is so important? Get the hint.... We're Coming Soon!

What Do You Think?:

WWRZS... what would rachel zoe say? Exactly. I love Stella McCartney's thigh high faux nappa boots. I personally think that many of this season's thigh highs run that fine line of street walker appeal, but Stella McCartney really added a very feminine approach the raunchy style of a thigh high. I think it was tastefully crafted and in true Stella fashion no animals were harmed, but your pockets will be.

The MoMa has recently produced a new photography exhibition entitled, New Photography 2009. The exhibit expands the current dimensions of the medium of photography. Pink- Androgynous Designs

What Do You Think?:

I only loved one look from Marc Jacobs Spring 2010 show. Yea, I said it! Ok before you kill me, I loved it in pieces. I liked the ruffles they were beautiful. I loved the satin undies over the outfit. I loved his choice of geisha makeup to play up the femininity of the look. But, all of it together reminded me of myself at 6 playing dress up in my mothers clothes and makeup. Sorry. But the one look I enjoyed in its entirety was the one with the ruffled boyfriend blazer. Most people on the streets of NY have been struggling to pull of the boyfriend blazer an still be feminine. They are trying powder blue blazers, ones with satin linings, a flashy belt to pull the oversized look together, but its falling flat. But the ruffle details on Marc Jacob's blazer was beyond perfect! What do you think?

What Do You Think?:

A month ago I fell in love. So sultry, so blended, so perfect. You may already know them and I apologize if I'm late, but I'm head over heels for the Noisettes. They currently lead the Amy Winehouse, Adele, and Lykke Li genre... and finally I think its a group with staying power. Their leading lady, Shingai Shoniwa, also makes her style look super unique and effortless. The style is a perfect mix of afro-chic and 1940's glam. Their video for single "I'll Never Forget You" is seamless and has Shingai reminiscent of a flapper while being nothing short of current. She's the new 'it' girl to follow and I'm right on her heels...

She has walked numerous catwalks and has been the face of many brands but nothing is more admirable than her work for Fashion Targets Breast Cancer. Contrast- Kara Walker And The Big 'O'

What Do You Think?:

At the age of 28 Kara Walker received the MacArthur Fellowship (the Genius Award) which salutes her promise for continued and enhanced creative work (and also awarded her with $500,000). Walker is known for her art which reflects African-American women's racial and gender identity. Oprah recently created her first 'Power List' which highlighted 20 women who made a positive contribution to the American society and included Walker as one of its few artists. Kara notes to Oprah Magazine online, "I was fed up with the expectations of what a black girl ought to be, but instead of rejecting them outright, I thought I would embrace every concept out there, sort of flouting the notions and taunting those who held them at the same time." Kara Walker's art is not ignorable and at times shocking, but it is nothing short of real. As people continue to progress it is important to use their respective purpose's to challenge the standard racial and gender identities of the females of color. And that is why MosaMuse was created. I want to show girls of color that they can be beautiful, fabulous, and not have to be undressed nor sexually submissive. Differences are now celebrated and its time that there is an avenue of expression for creative women of color who enjoy art, fashion, beauty and themselves.

In a few years I will be wearing Gianfranco Ferre everyday, every other week. What?... right now I'm broke. Here's the thing, I borderline how I feel about the whole soft look in general. Secretly (or not) I'm really into the screaming fashions. Flashy, gaudy, and maybe a tad raunchy is kind of what I'm drawn to. But now that I'm owning up to my more mature '19' year old self (i know, maybe I'm lying), and I'm kind of starting to dig the whole silk/lace thing. Gianfranco Ferre does it so perfectly and I realized... its all about the shape. Everything has a pleat, a flap, or a tuck. Its soft with a edge and nothing less than sophisticated. Ok, here's what wearing this takes me back to.... Remember when we were younger and we would watch the women who went to the boxing matches in furs, stilettos and tight sheath dresses? Ok, this is the modern version. Think of pairing this look with finger waves and a wine-red lip. You would be untouchable. Now think about being the first to wear this look... bold enough? I am... just give me the money.

Flashback Iconic- Hollywood Waves

What Do You Think?:

Glimpses of old Hollywood glamour are reemerging. This futuristic phase slowly rolling out (Rihanna better revamp quick). The smooth purr-like seductive fluidity of fashion and glamour is creepy back. (YES!) But don't expect it to come full circle. The new trend will be paired with Fall's over the knee boots, chunky accessories, and Look-At-Me bags. Imagine Gaudy and Glam having a baby with Glam's genes winning out by 20%. Get it? Keep up. One way that this trend will hit big is with the hair. Fingerwaves are back (as I predicted in January). Now that everyone has chopped their hair in Rihanna-mania and have become extremely bored and overwhelmed by the constant maintenance (thus, breakage), an easy solution is ever so needed. Check out Beyonce's finger waves in her video Sweet Dreams. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VbGV2_8Yqg4 And above is a pic of Halle with the style.

Pink- Pucker or Pout

What Do You Think?:

Sugar launches its new lipstick. A sheer-tinted lipstick that hydrates, repairs and protects lips. Formulated with SPF 15, this lip hydrator is free of petroleum, parabens and synthetic dyes. Alina Roytberg, the brand founder, states "For extra pouty, plump. and protected lips, layer any Sugar Lip Gloss shade on top of Sugar Rose Tinted Lip Treatment SPF 15. You'll get double the moisture, extra shine, and protective benefits of SPF 15" This is a easy way for us girls so to green while wearing red.

Hidden- Immortal Boutique

What Do You Think?:

It's Philadelphia's best kept secret! The only clue you have of it's existence is a small window display, but a treasure chest sits on the second floor at 18th and Sansom. Its called Immortal and its a small boutique owned by Ms. Caren Kreider. I walked inside and felt as if I entered another world. A world designed specifically for me (and you)! The boutique has unique vintage clothing, jewelery and accessories. Real vintage. Not costumes. Its a MUST visit for any fashion lover. Ms. Caren Kreider finds unique pieces from estates and reasonably resells to stylish individuals. She is impeccably dressed herself. Her fitting rooms are designed with glamorous pictures that take you into an era of pure style and beauty. The boutique makes you feel as if you opened your grandmother's jewelry box and everything was preserved at its highest quality. Alligator purses with unscratched lining, an antique rotary telephone from France, Chanel earrings..... the list is endless! This is a fabulous place to shop, a MosaMuse top favorite. Please visit and enjoy like I have enjoyed! 125 S 18th Street 2nd floor. 215.563.2344

Worldview- Overland to India

What Do You Think?:

Elise Overland designed her first Resort collection with inspiration from her travels to India. To be honest, I'm ready to be a jet-setter whose wardrobe is inspired by designer's collections, but I've never ever ever been a fan of resort. Ironically I worked retail on Madison Ave. for a store that only sold Resort attire. But it looks so phony! Tropical prints and cheesy patterns just aren't for me. But this Overland collection... I'm loving! This Resort collection is trendy, hot and sexy. Finally, a designer who uses their Resort collection as an extension of their line instead of some random frilly tropical designs. Love it. She moved up on my list and is one I'm going to follow a little more closely... and you should too.
